Our Trails

Traditional Mayan House

Fire Tower

Take in a panoramic view of the gardens and surrounding Maya Mountain foot-hills. The 35ft. high lookout tower, built by Amin Bedran, in memory of Ken duPlooy, is an exact replica of the towers used for fire management in the Mountain Pine Ridge. You may even be able to hear the local Howler Monkey troop

If you’re staying overnight as guests of the Garden or at Sweet Songs, take a walk on over to the tower for an unmatched view of the night sky. You are sure to marvel at the clarity of the Milky Way and the sheer number of stars and constellations you will be able to see!

Maya Medicinal Trail

The Maya, like all ancient societies had their needs met from the abundance of nature. Along the Medicine trail you’ll have the opportunity to see and learn about vines that store drinking water, plants that help lower blood pressure (cecropia), lower blood sugar (chaya), cure rashes and sunburn (gumbo limbo) relieve aches and pains (pheasant tail) plus many more natural remedies for today’s most common ailments. If you take a tour the guides will tell stories about how these useful plants have played an important role in the well being of their friends and family.

Rainforest Trail

Explore the Rainforest! The opportunities for exploring are diminishing as fast as the Rainforest itself. Tropical Rainforests, along with their endemic species, are rapidly disappearing due to deforestation from logging, mining, agriculture and ranching. Consequently, more than 17 % of the Amazonian rainforest has been lost in the past 50 years. Your next best option could be a walk along the Rainforest Trail, where you’ll be able to see some of the same plants that grow in a tropical rainforest environment.

Zingiber Alley

With plenty of shading overhead, this picturesque, narrow and winding pathway leads visitors through Zingiber Alley where the star attractions, Gingers & Heliconias, provide a dramatic splash of color. At last count, nearly 50 varieties of ginger and heliconias could be identified within the alley area. These showy plants are iconic symbols of the tropics and they make an ideal backdrop for that picture-perfect selfie.

Also on this trail you'll find the Elephant-foot Yam, coffee trees and Xate palms and many more.
